I've been working on a couple of things.  Mostly, doing more R&D on joint
systems.  Here's a new (?) way to stiffen those 1x4 plate hinges:

1) Find yourself som wire.  My guess is that it should be between 20 and 18
gauge wire.  I don't know for sure, because I used wire from a rectifying diode:

Clip off a piece of wire that is slightly shorter than the slot on the back of
the hinge:

Gently push the clipping into the slot using a miniature screwdriver.  Now you
have a hinge which is stiffer by (approx.) a factor of two.  The nice thing is,
unlike the 1x4 stiffened brick hinge, the process is completely reversible.  I
have removed the clipping and observed no degradation in the original
performance of the plate hinge.

Stack two of these stiffened plate hinges, and cover up the back with an
unstiffened plate hinge.  Now you have a completely hidden stiff hinge which is
comparable in stiffness (actually a little stiffer) than the 1x4 brick hinge.
No one will know your secret! ;-)

I used this new system to improve some of my mecha.  The following poses were
achieved using the stiffened plates:

"What are you saying, that I can dodge bullets?"

Yup, that's what's goin' on with me...

(...) How do you measure that kind of thing, anyway? I mean, I believe you, I do.... But that is a sweet idea. I've found that those hinges are (perhaps like all things) more fragile in their manufacture now than they were, oh, fifteen years ago. (...) (22 years ago, 29-Jan-02, to lugnet.build.mecha)

I've found that putting paper between the two pieces stiffens the joint nicely. However, I suspect your method allows for a greater weight load. (...) (22 years ago, 29-Jan-02, to lugnet.build.mecha)

Very clever Dr. Snead! That little slit just needs that wire huh...interesting! Another anadote (sp?) from the Dr.! So, you were able to get those poses using that technique, pretty neat. I always thought that your Mechs are so highly polished they (...) (22 years ago, 30-Jan-02, to lugnet.build.mecha)

What's going on? What's everyone building? Anything in the works? Who's Mech is next? Chime in, what are you guys working on? (This is my effort to add some substance to our forum) Legomaster (22 years ago, 29-Jan-02, to lugnet.build.mecha)
