You know what? I was just thinking of the same thing.
I recently picked up a 2001 Racers set, and despite the overall sillyness of
the set, it did occour to me that the little 2X2 monster driver would make a
passable alien mech pilot, and take up precious little space to boot.
Now, after getting a 2002 Racer set, with the 2X2 driver, but allowing for
an actual minifig head/helmet, I'm looking forward to making one of these
little guys a mech pilot, but having control over the look of the head.
