To answer multiple questions at once...
These are some design influences:
"Alpha-Azieru"
http://www2.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?BAN24490
"Nightingale"
http://www2.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?BCL1925
"Neue Ziel"
http://www2.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?BAN907719
I wanted to make something that
looked like it came from the same family of mega mecha,
rather than replicate the details of any one in particular,
sort of an "AlphaNightingZiel".
The smaller arms that fold out however are
nuclear disintegrators similar to "Omzack" in
"Hades Project Zeorymer".
The base is a big fuel tank which has four landing gear at the bottom.
These fold down into a sort of tailcone when the Cardinal is in flight.
It of course doesn't need walking legs since it's a space combat mecha,
but it could land on a moon or asteroid (and I found it a lot easier
to build here on earth without the danger of it falling over).
There's just something very elegant about a legless mecha...
The gray domed part in the midsection is the fusion reactor,
as large as one used in a space battlecruiser to power all
the weapons and main thruster. There are four heavy beam cannons,
two nuclear disintegrators, eight rearward antimissile turret guns
surrounding the main thruster nozzle,
and two giant grappling talons with beam blades.
