In lugnet.build.mecha, Peter Guenther writes:
1.  The current schema is more appropriate...  .space is for the "official"
space theme, and .build.mecha tends to focus more on MOC building techniques
(joint design, etc.)

First, that's not true.  Little of the discussion on .space is about the
official space theme, although you're right that mecha tends to focus on
building techniques than .space

Check the charter for .space:

<QUOTE>
lugnet.space– LEGO SYSTEM Space™: products (information, opinions, reviews,
etc.); building (settings, contexts, characters, projects, models, layouts,
plans, tools, tips, etc.); inspiration (ideas, movies, books, literature,
magazines, music, historical events, etc., as they relate to Space); etc.
</QUOTE>

So mecha discussions aren't totally off-topic there, though I'd guess that
easily 75% of the .space discussion of late IS...  According to how I read
the .space charter, people shouldn't be chatting over the wavelength of a
laser in that ng.  Or discussing administrative issues such as this one.  So
discuss mecha there, I'm sure people won't mind.

Second, consider this: How many LUGNET users would be extremely interested
in this, yet don't even know it's out there?  I was reading space long
before I realized there was mecha.  And while I check space regularly, today
is the first time probably in three months that I've looked at mecha--out of
sight, out of mind.  Putting it in space would attract more users.

How?  Why?  And would it be a big enough benefit to move an already busy and
well-populated newsgroup, just to appeal to new voices?

Consequently, should .build.arch be moved to .town?  Should .build.contests
be moved to .events?  I'm sure you could argue that there are more
appropriate places for these newsgroups as well, but the fact remains that
people have been using them and are used to them where they are.

So to end my rambling, I'd take Matt's advice, and post to both if you want
to reach the mecha builders and the space heads.

Cheers,
- jsproat

(...) Best suggestion? Why not have an @ link on the Space page like there already is for Star Wars? Keep mecha in its current place but also give it visibility in space. Peter (23 years ago, 17-Jul-01, to lugnet.build.mecha, lugnet.space, lugnet.general)
