I was sort of imagining he was in low power rapid fire mode,
trying to track a fast moving target (hence the blur), at least
this is what I settled on when another attempt at a big
blossoming beam looked cheesy because it didn't light
up the gundam. Still working on my technique in that picture,
need more experimentation.

I'm not a photography expert (by any means), but have you tried using
the low-tech approach using a flashlight (or something better) to
provide the lighting that would come from the beam/blade?  Put a blue
transparency on the flashlight, position the flashlight where the beam
would hit it, and you should be in business.
