Hi Mark,

(Comments inline.)
Hi Jer (Jeremy, is it? Jerry?) Welcome, and we look forward to seeing • your
stuff.

It's Jeromy, but I usually just go by Jer. It's easier that way :-)

I like the idea of breaking the site down into smaller pieces for
different people to work on. I've worked on similar projects in the
past, and spreading the task around generally means that the
site/sub-sites get updated more often. I think the two main reasons • for
that are A) people can concentrate on one task rather than trying to • do
it all and B) a little bit of friendly competition usually springs • up,
leading to more aggressive updates on each section of the over-all • site.
After all, do you think the Fighter guy is going to let the Mecha • guy
show him up? No way! :-)

While this could create healthy competition, it could also make the • site
look like 5 or 6 different sites. Our problem so far hasn't been lack • of
update, but rather a lack of a home for the site.

True. The problem with the "competition" angle was trying to find
the proper balance. Common logos, banners, and navigation tend
to help this, but, as you said, it can still make the site look kind of
patch-work and discontinuous in the end.

I hate the idea of having
pop-up windows, and sites like Xoom are horribly slow. We're looking • at some
options.

I've found that the only 100% effective way around the pop-up
window, ads, slow connections, etc. problem is to pay for a real
hosting service. I personally use Burlee (www.burlee.com). They've
got a pretty good plan ($12.95/m for unlimited space, 25 e-mails)
that I use and I've been happy with it. If paying a little bit for the
site is an option, this is a pretty good deal.

Wow, that is a pretty good deal. Thanks for the lead. ~Mark (24 years ago, 25-Oct-00, to lugnet.space, lugnet.general, lugnet.build.mecha)

FYI I'm using icom.com $8.25/mo for 45MB, unlimited email and xfer. I haven't used much of it yet. (...) (24 years ago, 25-Oct-00, to lugnet.space, lugnet.general, lugnet.build.mecha)
