They tried in the 70s/early 80s -- it was indeed a big stink. Most of the
problem was that they were obsessed with teaching conversion factors
imperial <-> metric -- much harder to remember than even the weird imperial
system measurements. People said things like: "the metric system is too
difficult to learn".
