Amusingly enough the original design was exactly as you described (studs out version) but it looked a bit bug-eyed so I moved the eyes on top. Thanks anyway.

I tried it and it would look great except that the parts can’t rotate enough :( They end up about 10 degrees from vertical. A real shame since if it could rotate more it would be great.

What if you removed the parts above the 4x4 round brick you have there now, and instead attached three of these to it, lined up above where the technic holes of the 4x4 round brick. (URL) Then, (...)
