   ‘morning Allister,

I saw your mecha on BrickShelf before seeing your post. Here is what I think : I like very much the fact you integrated as much as possible rounded bricks in this mecha : the barrels, the kind of rings used on the outside shoulders, the ball-joint form the AT-ST for the shoulder joint, etc... It give a retro kind of feel to the mecha, a friendly / non-agressive style I like. A little bit reminding of this or that Japanese robots. Good point, isn’it?

In fact I studied the Knight-Gigant pretty closely while I was building this. I love the look of it, but when you look closely there’s a lot of single stud connections in there. It must be as fragile as all get-out. But yes, I was aiming to use as many round parts as I could.

Not being a mecha builder, I guess the joint solutions you came with look inovative. At least the close pics you took allow us to understand how you did this, which is nice, as your mecha seems to be higly poseable!

I don’t know about innovative, but there were a couple of things I haven’t used before. The ball joints in the shoulder worked out nicely, although I wouldn’t hang many more parts of them than I did - they’re not really all that stiff, but they do look cool. I’m surprised they haven’t been used more widely for mecha building.

The knee is a 1x1 with five studs sandwiched between two technic bricks. It’s super stiff. I’ll definitely be using that again.

One more good point for the fact you could add some thrusters in the back and on the feet!

They were the last thing I added - needed some round things on the shins.

The mech is also cool. You got all the joints to work plus the right sculpturing to prevent it from looking like a box with stick-limbs.

Thanks. I do tend to think of building in lego as more of an exercise in sculpture than anything else.

The proportions look more steam-punk than anime--not my preference, but I think probably tougher to execute. In the anime style, you can always correct your shaping or spice up dull spots by adding fins, big guns or missile pods.

I’m not very well versed in the conventions, so I’ll take your word for it.

I like the green, and I like the UFO printed tile. Can’t help you with the name, though. I’m no good at it either. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for your comments anyway.

You are my new hero. I tried to start a mech a few months ago with similarly sized feet, and got stuck at the hips, even using the same ball joint. Your solution is fantastic!

It’s interesting to hear how people approach building mecha, most notably the starting point. This one started with the torso. I found it easier to get the proportions of the limbs right this way. My last one started with the legs and I ended up rebuilding them several times over after the rest of it was built to get the proportions right.

And is that paper stuck into the joint to make it have more or less friction, or am I just seeing a weird flash?

Much more friction. This one uses a double layer of your standard 80gsm printer paper. I’ve used up to four layers without apparently overstressing the socket and that was enough to cantilever the roo mech’s head. I use a piece about 7mm wide and about 15mm long for each fold. Push in into the socket before putting in the ball or it’ll tear. I also used sticky tape around the pins attaching the droid bodies for extra friction. This technique, strangely enough, works better on ‘frictionless’ pins than the ones with friction.

Oh, and the mech overall is quite nice. I like the overall chunky feel it’s got going, and the green accents are just the right amount of color. Great that you got a cockpit that holds a minifig in there too

Thanks.

has nothing to do with the green color scheme. nothing. nada. nope.

also nothing to do with me living in MSU country. nope. not a chance. sorry.

I think we have a winner, although you’ll have to enlighten me as to what it alludes to. Is it some sort of sporting reference?

ok, this is silly, but I want you to call it the “Gollie Gump”

Hehe. You surprise me coming up with a name I can understand. That name would definitely have suited the first incarnation of this one.

Allister! These pictures are great! Very very cool head, I like it alot. The parts you used worked for this design. The feet and lower legs are really nice too. I dig that knee joint. This is a nice Mech. Congrats.

Thanks. To be honest I think that’s the area that needs a bit of rework. I think I’ll make the shins two studs longer, and while I’m at it I must try and make the green snot on the sides less prone to falling off.

Oh and not to mention, there are not to many Green Mechs out there.

I’m not surprised. I was appaled at how much green I don’t have in my collection.

Question, how’s the preformace on the elbow?

Not too bad, but I’m not sure how big a gun it’ll be able to hold. That said, the shoulder will probably give up before the elbow will.

Also, do you keep your creations intact? Like the Roo Mech, will you keep those?

The roo mech still lives as does the white one built recently but that’s all, and probably not for much longer. I usually keep stuff built until the next BUGs meeting and break them up shortly thereafter. The oldest model I still have built is that black cargo ship. I don’t have a big enough stockpile, nor the display space to keep stuff built indefinitely.

PS. ‘bout time we had a mecha building contest isn’t it?

Ehh, no comment. I wish though. Then again, do you think we should?

O definitely. There hasn’t been one since Tony Knaak’s Mechastruct contest just after I came out of my dark age. That was, what, over two years ago?

How about ‘PerfectlyBalancedAwesomelyArticulatedBeautifullyDesigned-tron’?

Snappy.

For some reason, Symphony in Green Major comes to me. A little wordy, yes...but it seems to fit for some reason.

Great build man.

Thanks.

PS. And yes...too funny on the Lenny Shot. Gotta do one of those too :)

Do it. I’ve seen photos of many of the regular denizens of .space, but you remain an enigma. Time to put a face to the name.

I too, am working on a Mecha, in Grey and Green. (Lime Diet Coke was my inspiration, sadly)

Inspiration can come from anywhere. The trick is spotting it.

I like the look of this, something about it (possibly the thrusters of the back and kinda the feet) reminds me of the Sentinels from X Men Evolution. So I’m thinking the “Green Sentinel” buit that is a little boring.

anyway, top work, I’ve been driven to work on mine, right after that whole working thing, and exams, well, real life in general.

Priorities dude! Lego IS real life. :)

Actually I don’t know what to say.

What a fantastic mech this is Allister. When and where can we buy this model moc??! It looks so smooth and stylish. One of the most beautiful mecha I’ve seen! That’s why I can’t think of a name at the moment...

There’s one in low energy form in your collection right now.

Actually, I haven’t done any cadding for a while. I might do up some instructions for this one, and maybe the white one too. Would that be an adequate substitute?

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Cheers,

Allister
