So how do we volunteer to join the team? I'd love to do this...

You just did!
I've got you on my list. You do need to be a paid attendee of the Star Wars
Celebration III http://www.starwarscelebration.com to compete, but I have you on
the list now.. although the contest may be changing somewhat, I just had an
email conversation with the coordinator. I'll keep everyone up to date as much
as I can here.
They currently only have 2 teams plus the one I'm trying to organize, so they're
looking at alternative contests for the medallionas and prizes (which will
remain unchanged as it stands today).
But if we can manage to get them to a toal of 8 teams, they'll run it as
advertised is my understanding... so Come on folks.. volunteer for a team!

Ok, They have decided to go ahead and go for it even with only 3 teams.
That means we need 7-8 more builders! Come on Star Wars AFOLs! Let's rock this
party!!!
Anyone already in Indianapolis Area, I'll be receiving the practice set soon, so
Let's have a practice build on Saturday, April 8 1:00 PM at my house. Email me
for directions et al.

Saturday the 8th is bad. Maybe Saturday the 9th.
In any case, I'd like to attend, but I'll be in Denmark that weekend.

Joe, I'll join the team! The thing is that I can only be there on Saturday the
23rd. Do we have to be preregistered? I was planning on just paying at the
door. I'll try to see what days I can get off of work to come to a practice.

I spoke with the organizer, and, thanks to advertising on Starwars.com, the
entry/waiting list is up to 56 teams!

Um, wow. Thats quite the difference. Should be interesting to see how far
behind the LUGNET team the other teams are.
Thats a ton of ISDs and a lot of table space to boot.

No, no.. the Waiting list is that long.. they are only allowing 8 teams... of
which My primarily AFOL team is one..so Jump on the wagon folks...Ive still got
2-3 open spots on the team.

Yeah, Im kind of wondering how well that will work. 10 AFOLs can build an ISD
in about 1-2 hours, no problem. A non-Lego team? Who knows? The first AFOL build
took 13 people 1 hour, 43 minutes, IIRC. Will a non-Lego team be done before the
3-hour mark hits (which is when the next round starts, I think)? If they
practice, probably. If they dont?

I would guess that its still only going to be 8 teams, but I think 56 is the
number of teams attempting to register, but on the waiting list? Or perhaps
someone got confused and 56 was the number of people instead of # of teams.
If they had 56 teams... hmm... (doing math)... Theyd need to allow for 8 teams
all going at once, and thats assuming 3-hour blocks for each time slot, no time
for cleanup, etc. And thats also for the duration of the entire show (which
closes at midnight Friday and Saturday). So that would quadruple the amount of
space they needed, assuming they wanted to stress the schedule with times so
frequent and close together. And of course theyd need 110 ISDs to build with.
Wow. $33,000 worth of ISDs. How awesome would that be?
Even with 8 teams, thats 14 ISDs, which is still impressive. I wonder what
they do with the completed brick? Give it to the team that built it, I guess?
When we did our ISD build we used a bit less than 100 square feet of table
space, plus some standing around room-- so they need roughly 200+ at the moment,
and maybe 800+ if they had 56 teams? And thats still assuming theyd jam them
into the schedule like that. Probably would use more like 1200+ sq feet and have
12 teams able to compete at once, just for the sake of scheduling. Man, thatd
be insane.

Heres how theyre running it:
8 teams 10 people each.
2 Teams at a time competing
2 6 Banquet tables per team
4 sessions Friday (The Indy AFOL Knights will begin at 7PM)
Time limit was not specified, but appears to be 2.5-3 hours.
3 Sessions On Saturday (2x Semi Finals and Finals)

Simple--you disassemble the assembled ISDs and use the materials to build as
many SSDs as possible. How many ISDs did we determine youd need to build one
to-scale SSD? You should be able to squeeze a few out of 110 ISDs, right?
Dave!

I dunno, itd be cutting it close I think! The SSD is what? Like 10x the size of
an ISD? Which, from an area perspective would require 100 ISDs to have the same
surface area. And the remaining 10 to try and give it some semblance of
structural integrety. Wow. And not even remotely close to a Death Star.

Jeez! I hadnt done the math and didnt realize that the SSD was quite so huge.
The excellent radio program This American Life ran a
story about living aboard
the aircraft carrier
USS John Stennis. One person had the tedious job of restocking the ships
vending machines for the crew of 5,000, twelve hours per day. I know that
droids would probably handle this kind of thing on an SSD, but yikes! How many
Womp Rat Bars might the crew consume in a day?
Hey, while were on the subject, I came upon
this nice SSD by Mike Taylor while
googling for MEGABLOKS MOCs. Mike doesnt seem to have mentioned it here on
LUGNET, but I may be wrong. Though its not to scale with the LEGO ISD, its
still a cool representation.
Dave!
