Well, this boy is a total LEGO-maniac, and his father initially contacted me in late 2005 about somehow doing a project together with his son. The father was interested in having his son learn about what I do and how I approach the problem-solving of creating a large LEGO sculpture (learning about scale, simple physics, design, etc) -- The father didn’t just want to simply buy a big sculpture that would get dusty.

So from day 1, the boy was involved in everything from finding reference photos, sketching on graph paper, and building prototypes, through to the actual design and construction of the sculpture. We work around his schedule so we usually only get a few hours done per week (if any!). So far the project has taken 340 hours spread across nearly 100 building sessions since early 2006. (If you look in the photos, you can see how much he’s grown!)

At first, the project was more like teaching a class. (“Here’s what we’re going to do.” .... “Put that brick there.” .... “Duplicate this pattern for the rest of the wall”... etc) but as he became more skilled, I was able to give him responsibility for designing and completing sections on his own, and then “grading” his results and/or tweaking them with him. Most recently, we collaborated on a design of the elevated train line and we were both contributing ideas to the design with equal fervor! :)

(...) Having the patience and ability to work with/teach a grade schooler is very commendable, Sean! You better watch out; one day he might take over your job! :) Oh yeah, the Stadium is awesome. In-progress shots are always appreciated. -Bryan (16 years ago, 23-Sep-08, to lugnet.build.arch, FTX)
