Hello, I teach CAD at a Community College in California, and for the last few
semesters I've incorporated LEGO (specifically, LEGO Technic) into my
curriculum. My students design a vehicle by modeling the pieces on the computer
(AutoCAD, presently). Some of them actually buy the kits and put them together.
We usually have a race at the end of the year.. The purpose of the class is to
learn 3D modeling concepts. I just use the LEGO as a tool for visualization.

My problem is I have both Architecture students and Mechanical Engineering
students in my class. The Architecture students don't want to play with LEGO,
and for some reason complain to me that it has nothing to do with Architecture.
Personally I think that anything that encourages you to think about 3D space
has a bearing on Architecture! (I don't force them to do a car, they can do
whatever they want)

What I'm looking for is some cool websites that have MOC's on them that
correspond to real buildings - not necessarily futuristic or Town-type, but
actually trying to look realistic. If the MOC's were recognizable as famous
works, that would be even better. The train stuff is OK, but it's still a
little too toy-like - i.e. a little too "cute". The larger the scale the
better.

I just want to show them that LEGO can be used to create something more than
little cars for kids to play with - that it can be used as a real modeling
tool.

(Before you all flame me, let me make this clear - you don't have to convince
ME that this is true, I'm looking for sites that will help ME convince THEM.
And yes, this is a Community College, so perhaps the level of abstract thinking
is not up there with, say, MIT...  These kids want to do Frank Gehry, and
they can't see how LEGO helps them do that..)

Any thoughts from real architect-AFOL would be appreciated as well.

Thanks,

Darrell

My submission is nothing compared even to Bram's creations, but it is
something much more acheivable with limited pieces. I live in DC and find
the local townhouses an interesting architechural study. The front facades
are very decorative- most of them turn of last century or older. But being
attached to the house on both sides, the interior and window placement is
restrictive. Here is a front facade I built based on general architectural
styles from those DC townhouses:
