I had an idea for a sculpture, a rather obvious idea because it's in the
news now. This 3rd (?) century giant Buddha cliff-statue was just demolished
in Afghanistan. Here are some articles with 1997 photos:

other nice photos: http://www2.rawa.org/buddha.htm

They say that this was a unique Buddha in Hellenistic dress, on account of
that the two statues were situated on the "silk road" between east and west,
or rather, another legacy of Alexandrian cultural mixing.

Building it out of Lego would be the least one could do, to salvage
something out of this stupidity.

There is talk starting about rebuilding the Bamiyan Buddhas: (URL) didn't understand that these statues don't belong to the Taliban. They belong to Afghanistan, to human history." --Amanulah Haiderzad, sculptor (...) (22 years ago, 18-Apr-02, to lugnet.build.ancient)
