Force, strenght, did anyone ever measure?

Hi all, I'm running into trouble with my mobile crane project. The boom is pretty heavy. I want to raise it with a rack/pinion, but I wonder how much force they can take? I reckon that for the first bit up the horizontal force will be around 50N. (...) (24 years ago, 16-Jan-01, to lugnet.build, lugnet.technic)

Duq, I once had a 8t gear in rack & pinion lifter break on me - it was only a single width rach, though. It was in a fair-ground ride I built (many years ago). The arm it was lifting was pretty heavy, but I didn't actually weigh / measure it. If (...) (24 years ago, 17-Jan-01, to lugnet.build, lugnet.technic)

My model (link below) uses elevators with a double rack and double drive axles (four z8 pinions). I have tested it with a payload of 36lbs (more than enough for a complete scale-size Saturn V). By my calculations, thats 40N per elevator. The rubber (...) (24 years ago, 17-Jan-01, to lugnet.build, lugnet.technic)

Cool! That's an impressive machine! I was actually thinking about using 2x2 8t gears, but I don't have the room in my model (And I've run out of racks too). Encouraging anyway, I'll do some testing this weekend (and probably post a picture of the (...) (24 years ago, 17-Jan-01, to lugnet.build, lugnet.technic)

If you can, use a worm to drive the rack; you'll be better off. It'll take more load and if some of the other stages in your gear train break or slip (You'll want to have a belt stage in there somewhere so you won't break things anyway), the rack (...) I've never measured it, but if someone can find a value for the elastic modulus of ABS it'd be easy to calculate a rough estimate of how much the force the teeth can take. -Xanthra47 "Duq" <Duq@nlgateway.net> wrote in message (...) (24 years ago, 18-Jan-01, to lugnet.build, lugnet.technic)
