You could try suspending a platform from 4 ceiling rings. If you happen to
have the ladders available, Cary's solution would be easier, but if not,
ceiling rings are cheaper than ladders. You just have to use big solid
ones - about 1 1/4" diameter across the ring, 1/4" or so diameter material
forming the ring, and as long a screw thread as you can get. Bolts are
better but they require you can get at the top of the joists, screw-in rings
you can install from underneath. They _must_ go into the ceiling joists. Get
a large friend to hang off each one separately and yank and bounce on it -
if it doesn't move, you're OK hanging from 4 of them. You can then hang a
platform from them. 3/4" ply (you should be able to buy a 2' x 4' ready-cut
piece at your lumberyard) with again, good solid rings (this time they can
be bolts) at the corners, and strong rope or chain to hang the whole lot by.
This will be more unstable than the ladders and planks solution (it will
move while you're lying on it) but that could be an advantage - you could
have adjustment ropes attached sideways to heavy furniture or doorknobs etc
and be able to pull yourself around over top of the model while you're on
the platform.
