I haven't built a MOC in almost a year for just that reason - I've reached the
point that I simply have too much Lego unsorted in order to find the piece I need.
If it's not in my sorted drawers right now, forget it, it will take hours to find
if I ever find it. I started customizing a used 8880 I got on Ebay ($75 including
shipping, 98% complete, woohoo!), and it took me more time to find ONE part than to
experiment with several mods.
I'm seriously considering taking a week off of work so I can clean house, and use
the floorspace to lay out buckets/bags/boxes and sort out ALL of my Lego, then sell
off half of it (the half I can live without, of course ;-).
I stopped trying to add up the # of pieces I had ages ago, as it's hopeless - I've
bought over 200lbs of bulk Lego in the last year, and I have a stack of sets in one
corner of my dining area that totals well over 100K pieces AFTER selling down at
least 1/3 of it, if not more. I know I have more than 250K, but probably less than
500K, but that's as close as I can get to an estimate anymore :-/
