Hi there,
I have some thoughts to share. I have built many space bases. These are
instructions to build a pretty cool, but simple base.First off, get a 32x32
green baseplate. Then, build 4 corner-shaped walls around the center of the
baseplate about 8-10 bricks high(remember, this should cover the whole
baseplate.) The base should look like this:

It should look like an "X" with 4 doorways. I like to call it the "Ex-agon
Base". Use plates to roof it of course and doors for the doorways. I suggest
to put a large computer made of about 4 2x2 sloped control panels (2 on each
side) and a monitor in between the panels ,inside the base. For defenses,
you could put a large laser on top(Explorien laser cannons work great.). To
finish it, maybe you could add a communication tower or something. I hope
