I'm planning on using regular and wide technic tractor tread links to build a
chain drive which will push the train up the first hill.

I read about lego coasters here (lugnet) before and was wondering if • anyone had
tips.

I built a LEGO roller coaster once.  I used 4.5V train track for the rails
and a 4.5V engine for the car.  I had a 2nd car connected that actually
carried the batteries (in the old 4.5V battery box - The square one, not the
train-specific one).

You can't use 12V or 9V track because it won't flex sufficiently and you
won't be able to get reliable track contact if you flex the track, even a
little bit.

The 4.5V track is really flexible, both up/down, and right-left.  In a few
cases where the angle change was extreme (at the top of the first hill), I
shaved a bit off the bottom of the end of the rail connectors so that they
could flex more on the connectors.

The track started with a large hill and then plunged down and around a 180
degree turn to the left.  Then, it dropped into a 360 degree spiral, and
then a 180 degree turn back to the station.

The train car actually ran around the track reliably!  Of course, it wasn't
very good for the motor because it put a lot of load on it up the hills and
forced it to go too fast down the hill

The elevated portions of the track were built up on technic beams.  The
station was a town-themed building with a platform on both sides.

Unfortunately, I never took any pictures.  It was at least 15 years ago!
