I read about lego coasters here (lugnet) before and was wondering if anyone • had
tips.

It probably depends on how big you want to make it.  I have built a few
coasters, one is displayed at www.squig.net, and I tend to make some what
large.  I use the old 4.5 gray train track right side up for the turns, on its
side for the hills and loops.  The one I have on my page does not have any
roller coaster trains, but balls that runn on the track.  I am working on a
new coaster that will have loops and a train to hold several minifigs.  I
won't be able to work on it until I move into my house in November.  There are
some other designs you can find at members.nbci.com/Whew/DAVESLEGOBLITZ.HTM
that don't use the train track.  Hope this helps.
