I used to ignore the main model and strip all new sets for pieces in MOC's.

Recently, I started building the main model if its good, but they usually
are really easy.

For a given project size, I've found that a MOC takes 3-5 times longer than
building something from the directions.

In my LEGO history, I've only encountered 2 "difficult" to build sets using
instructions.

The first was the first Expert Builder Auto Chassis 956.  This was LEGO's
first attempt at providing complex sets and they didn't yet have all the
necessary special parts to make it work properly.  I had to spend tons of
time getting things aligned and figuring out how all the thin plate pieces
went together.  Plus, I was only 9 at the time.

The later Auto Chassis 8860 was easy in comparison, even though it had more
pieces.

The other difficult set was the LEGO space shuttle 8480.  The main model
from this took me about 15 hours to build, and I was an adult this time!
I'm sure that there are some studs out there that built this faster, but it
was definitely quite challenging.  I can't imagine trying to reproduce this
in any other way than exactly following the directions!  I really admire the
guys that designed this set.

I've been getting too quick in building lego projects. For the $, I'd like • the
building time to last longer...an idea I've been using on the UCS Star • Wars
models and others is to not obey the instruction books--but instead, build
from front to back, or back to front, or left to right, etc.

Suddenly the instruction manual becomes a series of clues, and its • challenging
to figure out what comes next and why.

Maybe it sounds silly, but it makes these $100 boxes of legos last
longer...the instructions seem too easy as is...

i've tried assembling by looking at the box alone, but I'm not smart • enough to
pull it off...maybe with Duplo :)
