Hmm... well I'll make a short list just out o' my head, and then other ppl
can add to it if I miss something.

Mark's List:

Obviously you won't be able to have one part in every color, so maybe ask
what your son's preference is in this department.

Bricks:
you likely won't need many large bricks. I'd toss in some 1x1, 1x2, 1x3,
1x4, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 bricks and slopes. Also include some 1x1 cylinders.

Plates:
Definitely include a various assortment of plates in as many sizes as can
fit in the box... obviously you won't be taking many 8x12's for making small
vehicles, but I think you get my drift.

Wings:
Include a few of each shape of wing, for variety.

Wheels:
A small assortment of wheels will be useful for making cars or airplanes

Windows:
You should toss in a small assortment of various small canopies and car
windshields (don't forget the little roof/hinge parts you use to make
minifig cars)

Thin walls:
These are useful in making vans or trucks, since you can fit more into
something that uses thin walls. Also, don't forget the 1x2 thin-wall-on-tile
parts, for making cockpits and cars that are only 4 wide.

Special Parts:

-Make sure you have some transparent parts in several colors, so the
vehicles can have "lights" on them

-Toss in some of the special 1x1 plate-with-clip-or-stud-on-side pieces, so
lights/antennas/tools/whatever can be attached to the vehicles.

-Include at least one set of 1x3 doors, perhaps in both 1 brick and 2 brick
sizes.

-You may want to put in some of part # 2399 like I used on my BD-5. Good for
making cockpits!

Also toss in a few of the parts like I used on the bottom of the BD-5
(sorry, I don't wanna look it up in the parts ref ;^)  )

-Throw in a few tools, antennae, and other minifig holdables that would be
good.

-Some of the Engine parts like on the TLC Spy Runner's wingtips would be
good.

That's all I can think of ATM.

Don't forget the minifigs!

Thanks Paul!

My goal was to make the most of the fewest parts, and I think I accomplished
my goal.

It was even kid-tested yesterday at Wayne's house (see my other post in
.general) and it held up perfectly.

Kid testing cannot be underemphasized. This model has a very high vroomability
factor too.

This is an example of a really good minimal model. Which brings me to another
point.

My kids LEGO collection is in a GBT (Great Big Tub) and I'd like to fill
a Plano tackle box with a set of general pieces for building vehicles and
spaceships so he can take it on trips.

If you had the opportunity to bake a "universal" set out of more than blocks,
what would you put in it? It has to fit in a 3720 Plano box...

Cheers,

Ralph Hempel - P.Eng
