Hi, i'm trying to build a space ship, that has a rotating midsection.
The midsection contains a number of shipping style containers that
rotate about a central spine that connects the front of the ship to
the rear. Using most of my Technic (and a hidden metal support) i can
get it going, except the rotation.

as in (fixed pitch font)

but i can't figure a way to create a turntable style section
connecting the rotating bit to the main hull. The rotating bits weigh
in at about 5-7 kilos (10-16lb). I though of maybe one of those really
lage cogs fixed in the axis, and smaller cogs fixed on the rotator,
that turn as it turns. But the central spine is to big for this and
i'm now at a loss. I don't have much technic unfortunately.

(The metal support is needed due to the larger weights at the bow and
stern).

Many Thanks (Help!!!!!!)

Heh.  I tackled this just recently when thinking of things for Mark's
space contest.  Being a generous soul, I'll share my thoughts:

I used 2 technic turntables, each studs "out" from the centre.  I joined
them with a robust technic frame - now you've essentially got a fixed
middle and two independently rotating ends (depending on your
perspective).

Then you use a small gear and a long axle to rotationally lock the two
turntables together by connecting each gear to the perimieter teeth of
the turntables.  Now you can hold the "bow" or "stern" in your hands and
rotate the centre section while the other end of the ship stays put with
respect to the part you're holding.  The nicest benefit is that you've
got a hole the size of a 24 tooth gear through the entire ship.  Good
for passageways, or metal reinforcing rods, or what have you.

I've thrown together a model at:

Sorry for the sloppy editing, but LDraw's not my forte.  At any rate,
the sections coloured in green are rotationally locked; the blue stuff
is where your cargo attaches, and there's room for a 2 cm reinforcing
rod right through the middle if you're so inclined.
