I'm drooling at the thought of possibly being able to someday cover a 48x48
baseplate with a mosaic of 1x1 tiles. Let's see... 48x48 would be 2,304
1x1 tiles...what would that cost? Assuming the price of 1x1 tiles was 1/4
the prices of 2x2 tiles, which currently cost US$6.99 per 100 according to
<http://www.lego.com/bulk/bulkpage2.asp>, that would mean shelling out about
US$40. Realistically, the price of 1x1 tiles would probably be more like 1/3
to 1/2 the price of 2x2 tiles, but that would still come out less than US$100
to cover a 48x48 baseplate.
Alternatively, using 2x2 tiles to cover a 48x48 baseplate would mean 576
2x2 tiles, or again about US$40.
Gawd I hope that tiles become available in more colors!
