It doesn't appear that Mindstorms is part of the project,

Since they just use evolutionary programming to _design_
constructions, I doubt that they would ever need Mindstorms.

Their claims about the lightness of the table[1] is most
dubious. Alone the fact that it isn't symmetric. And just
from the first glance, I found two changes that would
improve both "lightness" and strength of the structurel.

I saw this on Slashdot today. Seems some folks calling themselves the "Dynamical & Evolutionary Machine Organization", and funded partially by the Office of naval Research, are using Lego bricks and evolutionary programming to determine optimal (...) (25 years ago, 3-Oct-99, to lugnet.build, lugnet.off-topic.geek)
