I don't agree. Considering last year, it is maybe, but I can't call it
extraordinarily good. Just look at the sets available in 1995,1996 and even
1997,  so you might see my point.

1995:
         8812 Aero Hawk I ( helicopter)
8816 Off Road Rambler (small off-road vehicle)
8829 Dune Blaster (off road race car)
8858 Rebel Wrecker (off road tow truck)
         8714 LEGO Technic Team (mini-figures)
         8412 Sky Wasp ( helicopter)
         8422 V-Twin Super Bike
Nitpicks:
         8440 Octan Indy Racer
         8485 Technic Control II

1996:
8207 Dune Duster or Hawaiian Beach Patrol (UK)
8223 Hydrofoil 7 or Powerboat Columbia (UK)
8230 Police Buggy or Miami Police Patrol (UK)
8244 Convert-ables or Transformer Set (UK)
          8408 V2 Sports Car (UK)
          8425 Sky stormer (UK)
Nitpicks:
8286 3 in 1 Car or Amphipower (UK)
          8443 Pneumatic Logger (UK)
          8456 Multi Racer (UK)
8480 Space Shuttle or Space Shuttle Colorado (UK)

1997:
          8205 Blast-Off Dragster
          8215 Gyro Copter
          8216 Turbo I
          8222 VTOL
          8229 Tread Trekker
          8232 Chopper Force
          8408 Desert Ranger
          8437 Future Car
Nitpicks:
          8277 Giant Model Set
          8299 Search Sub w/CDROM
          8250 Search Sub
          8425 Black Hawk
          8443 Pneumatic Log Loader
          8456 Fiber Optic Multi Set
          8459 Pneumatic Front-End Loader
          8479 Barcode Multi-Set

I personally call most of recent 82xx stuff as Technic Jr., and competition
series are even worse. Sets generally consists of not realistic looking,
action oriented models using very less general purpose classic technic
pieces.

Has anyone else noticed that the 1999 Technic line is extrordinaraly
good?

Hmmm ... I can only agree to a part of this ... the line is much better
than
last year (or possibly the year before) ... but ...

Just about every set has a good design and lots of useful new pieces.

this is part of the problem ... I picked up the 8445 (Indy Storm) ... and
I liked the selection of parts that I didn't have, but there is only about
30
or so 'normal' technic bricks.  Compare this to the 8440 ... and you'll
see ...

Not since the space shuttle in 1996 has there been a technic set I
actually
wanted to own, now they're all worth having.

I'll agree with this, but I want multiples, since there are some pieces
that
are not great in number ...

If only we could get the
Technic
folks to visit the Town, Space (remember when there used to be a space
theme?)
and Train folks, we'd have a reniscance.
