Hello,
I am open to suggestions on how to make a minifig torso hover above the legs. • I
am thinking that a 1x1 clear round plate in between the ridges in the bottom • of
the torso may do, but the piece always pops out; the fit is too tight. If I • had
a ridgeless torso, it may work, but I don't, and if I did, I wouldn't put it
through the mutilation of my next project. (Can we just say it uses a Royal
Knight silver sword, an X-acto knife, and a lot of blue and red paint?)

Sounds like you're preparing for a picture that I want to see :-) Without
giving away what I think you're doing, here's what came to my mind first: have
one of the torso hands grip a longer element such as a spear or a polearm, and
have something else grip the polearm out of the frame of the picture, or at
least not noticeable. It doesn't have to be a weapon, just something that
looks okay or not noticeable in the context of the shot.

It's an old trick I used to use (and I think TLG did once or twice too) when
setting up an astronaut jetpack shot: you could make an astronaut "hover" by
making him hold a tool, like a wrench, that could grab securely onto a rocket
gantry piece that he was adjusting / repairing. I don't have a picture handy
though.
