What are some techniques you use when building a large MOC for display at a
show?
For instance, with a tall building, do you build it in separable sections and
how?
For an extensive landscape, do you agonize over how to choose the baseplates
so that they can be moved separately with no structures spanning the joints?

Personally I set myself limits. I am currently building a modular train layout.
No section is larger than 20x40, which is what I am comfortable with carrying.
All of the buildings will come off and hopefully fit in computer paper boxes.
All of the other details such as trees lighting and cars go in another box. The
main thing to remember is Lego is not strong. You can build something quite
sturdy but if its not packed with consideration to flexing and gravity bad
things happen. Eventually when I am ready to make my layout show ready it will
have cases built so I can stack modules. Each case will have rubber casters and
possibly padded internal surfaces.
As module design is concerned, I wouldnt worry about overlapping buildings,
roads or anything else for that matter. In fact doing so will make the joint
disappear, which is what you want. You want the viewer to notice the details in
your model not the joint lines. If you dont understand this go to a model train
show. You will notice that on some layouts that the scenes blend together and it
looks almost seamless now go look at a layout that is incomplete or poorly done.
I guarantee the first thing you will notice is a joint. Now this isnt limited
to train layouts. This can be applied to other large models as well. The trick
is to hide the joint in corners or behind something.
Heres an example:
The joint is hidden between the building and the hill. The trees help it
disappear as well as its location.
I hope this answers your question.

| Yes, that is the direction I was wondering in. My big problem is joints: say I have a building that is 52 studs long. For carrying, it could divide into two near the middle, but that makes for the ugliest joint. I have tried to hide the joint next (...) (19 years ago, 9-Aug-05, to lugnet.build, FTX)
