Hey legohaulics! One of my cooler MOCs--my chess set. The pieces were designed and built by me... and NO MINIFIGS! There’s so many minifig chess sets out there--it’s getting very old. Here’s a change. Brickshelf thread is-- http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=134535

Note that the drawer does fit all 32 pieces inside.

Enjoy, and please post anything that pops into your head about this! (But dont be too critical :D )

Not too critical - OK, I’ll start with a minor criticisim that the pieces seem to big for easy play with the board, but I haven’t played it so I wouldn’t know for sure.

Other than that, this is the nicest Lego chess set I have ever seen, and I think I’ll make a copy of it for my own use if you don’t mind. I little things like how the king piece, though wider than the board squares, is designed never to interfere with another pieces. The Castle and Knight pieces are very, very well done. And the pawns just rock - simple and exactly the right look!

Thanks for the inspiration, and please don’t take my one criticisim too hard - small is actually one of the other fine attributes of this set. Though I am curious if it “plays” well or if pieces are bumped over very easily...

-Matt :)

I like the chess set as well, but I share Matt’s concern. Onsolution would be to magnatize the pieces and board. I’d put a very small, but strong, magnet under each tile http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D31&cat=10. And the same or a slightly larger magnet in each peice http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D33&cat=13 or http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D34&cat=13. These should fit inside the tubes just fine. And keep the peices centerd on a square.

(...) I'm very curious about these magnets. Have you tried them? How tight is the fit into the tubes? Also, do the 2x2 tiles sit properly with the small magnets underneath? I'm thinking about using these magnets for my copy of the Cathedral board (...) (19 years ago, 7-Jul-05, to lugnet.build, FTX)
