Neat stuff. I am a fan of the door rail part as I think it is quite

rounded, non sloped, full stud offset parts. Did you consider and reject
other compromise parts?

I wonder what a version of this would look like using various rounded parts
(ala the ATSF F unit nose)?

I tried to build each piece of the puzzle as straightforward as possible.
The 3x3 plate without corner was not in the first (MLCad) version. I wanted
something to stick out slightly (to come closer to the shape of a sphere),
without using an extra stud. I think this was the best compromise.
I started designing with 1x2 jumper plates, but by using those you always end up
with holes on the next layer. I wanted every piece of the puzzle to have smooth
sides, even on those that become invisible once the puzzle is solved. (If you
only build a sphere - no puzzle - these 1x2 jumper plates could be used)
The main restriction was of course the shape and size of every seperate piece of
the puzzle.
While designing in MLCad I also kept in mind NOT to use too many elements I
don't have in my own collection - apart from the 1x2 plate with door rail, I
accidentally found hundreds of these in the pick-and-mix (only in blue).

I never considered using slopes - I just forgot. Don't give me too many new
ideas: I promised to do a train-related project next. ;-)
