Any tips for building tall towers?

I'm working on a module for the Great Ball Contraption, but this involves having
a lot of stuff elevated way up off the plate. At the same time, I don't have a
ton of bricks -- I'm a newbie to the AFOL world.
So, I need to build some supporting towers that are tall and strong, with a
minimum number of bricks. I will experiment with the obvious ideas of course,
but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this problem and has any special
advice to share.

| (...) I've always wondered about building a tower using just 4 2X4 bricks per level arranged in a way that there's a 2X2 opening in the center that would serve as a shaft as you go upward. Once the tower reaches its final height, top it off with a (...) (20 years ago, 19-Dec-04, to lugnet.build)
