Any tips for building tall towers?

I'm working on a module for the Great Ball Contraption, but this involves having
a lot of stuff elevated way up off the plate.  At the same time, I don't have a
ton of bricks -- I'm a newbie to the AFOL world.

So, I need to build some supporting towers that are tall and strong, with a
minimum number of bricks.  I will experiment with the obvious ideas of course,
but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this problem and has any special
advice to share.

(...) I've always wondered about building a tower using just 4 2X4 bricks per level arranged in a way that there's a 2X2 opening in the center that would serve as a shaft as you go upward. Once the tower reaches its final height, top it off with a (...) (20 years ago, 19-Dec-04, to lugnet.build)
