Matthew,  (my first article here)

This is the same crappy generic reply TLG sent me back into the 1980's.  That's
why I went over their heads and sent a letter to Peter Eio (then) president of
TLG USA.  He had the Consumers Affairs manager reply to me personally about how
difficult things are for parts... etc. Same story, different decade.

However, I may have a little more leverage now.  I recently displayed one of my
buildings at a Detroit "Festival of the Arts" outdoor fair (300,000 attended).
Walking on my way back to the car with the building at the end of the day, I
stopped off at one of the Mansions nearby (midtown Detroit) where I knew one of
the lawyers in the law firm that owns the mansion.  As it turns out the law firm
(Charfoos & Christiansen) lead partner Mr. Christiansen is also the Consul
General of Denmark (for the Midwest?) here in Detroit, and the 45 room French
Chateauesque mansion (with 3 towers,  more like a castle) on Detroits main
street (Woodward Ave.) is the Danish Consulate!

Well to make a long story short (whenever have I made a long story short!), I am
going to do a Christmas LEGO display at the mansion, and the consulate wants
pictures as advertisement for Danish products in the US.  I plan on getting as
much mileage as possible (possible newspaper article, but that's another story)
and hope to make some noise about parts problems, and what I had to buy to get
the buildings I built (7 Yellow Castle Sets, etc.).

I am then going to write Mr. Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen (LEGO AG Chairman and
founders grandson), with some promotional photo's/news articles, and request
some relief for us suffering LEGO maniacs.  Also, I will discuss the world wide
discrepancy in parts availability because some countries do allow bulk orders (I
won't divulge this to him or this newsgroup - sworn to secrecy) and why can we
not have more parts packs (tiles, arches, windows, round bricks, etc) available
to us.  I will also comment on the Acropolis Contest, and how rediculous it is
that no contest entrant can make an entire Greek columned temple because the
supply of 2x2 white round bricks is so restricted. (I'll ask Erik Wilson's
permission first before I mention this fact.)  I will comment as to
understanding the bulk orders problem of individual parts counts, labor
involved, etc.  But there is no reason they cannot grant us more in the
availability of parts packs, mentioning that in the 1960's the parts pack
assortments were WONDERFUL!  And today they suck!

I plan on making a lot of noise about this.  Hopefully (but not probably) we can
get some relief on this in one way or another.

My last trump card on this is the WALL STREET JOURNAL.  They love to write
stories about businesses that go opposite the "consumer satisfaction" route.
I've already contacted someone there.  They told me to keep them informed.

Maybe this seems a little like grandstanding, but ...... I WANT MORE LEGO!!!
And I know all of you do too.

There, I feel better now that I've vented 13 years of frustration..........

But I do believe strongly in the power of the pen, and you just need to carry a
bigger stick sometimes (agh, more cliches again!)

I understand the weird catalog I received now.  After I sent pictures of my
Huge Gothic Cathedral to Lego, I received the "Lego, Like You've Never Seen
It" catalog a couple of weeks later.  A week after that I received a letter
from Consumer Affairs' "Susan Williams" thanking for the pictures and
returning them for "safe keeping".  Definitely a form letter.  They
mentioned that they would be sending me the catalog in the mail shortly.  In
the letter I sent with the pictures I suggested Lego offer parts packs in
more colors for the basic bricks and slopes and plates in more colors.
Apparently whenever you correspond with Lego and make product suggestions
they make absolutely no comment on your suggests other than thanking you for
making them and sending you a retail catalog.

Still kind of weird, but at least I understand why they sent it to me.

(...) Go, Gary go! Chants of "Gary.. Gary.. Gary.." were heard throughout the land. "Gary for Lord Emperor of Time and Space" bumperstickers began springing up all over, and the coveted Gary Istok minifig commanded $75 in AucZILLA IX! ;-) (26 years ago, 8-Oct-98, to lugnet.build)
