Actually I have. After I built this, I already have noticed that same issue.
The hard surface is good for sliding pieces off the table, but the tile and
front board kind of make the bottom ones get stuck. What could be done is to
have a small trap door of some type and say a 3033 tub under the table held
into place by a small shelf. This could be placed at one (or both ends using
two tubs). But this will have to wait for the next one.
But I will say, getting a 4'x8'x 3/8" board, and placing 1'x1' floor tiles on
it works great! I feared getting anything "rubbery" because you would NEVER be
able to slide the pieces around. They would just stick.
Another option that I just thought about. Some contact cement, and the
material a mouse pad is made from. Might be able to find something like that
at a fabric store. Its soft, and I think legos would slide on it. (might do
this for my next one)
And talking about train tables .. hehe .. here is the history on that. The 4x8
board which the entire thing is based around is about 25 years old (dam nice
chunk of wood too!). It use to be the board that my old train setup was on.
Glad I saved it. Was about to get cut down and be used in the back end of my
truck to protect the bed when I am hauling rocks/dirt around (I am landscaping
my house right now)
