I got a request recently to say a few more things about LEGO windows.  I
have to admit, though, that I don't know too much about the newer 1990's
windows, and maybe someone else can take the baton for Part 4 -1990's
windows (Town Jr.), for some of the really tall 3 pane windows, etc.

I
just recently found out that Joshua Delahunty keeps up the Lugnet
Databases, (the proverbial keeper of the LEGO Ideology).

That's not entirely true.  I HELP with the LUGNET/Pause database.  I
scour through old scans of different brochures, both those I own and
those from the 'net.  I dig through folks' reference web sites, all in
the attempt to get the data on Pause as accurate and useful as possible.

There are actually 4 people who "maintain" that database; I just happen
to spend more time than I should doing it.  :-)

Joshua is
probably more than qualified to take a stab at a Part 4 than I am.

Probably not.  I'm not a Town Jr. owner in any great way.  I can tell
you what windows exist and about when they were likely released, but I'd
be going off brochure scans and such. Out of all that's thought of as
"Town Jr.", I do think they've brought out a REALLY cool window in that
triple-angled thing that the latest large Police Station had on the
front of it.  Definitely a PLUS to recent town releases.  Of course, I
guess Extreme Team had them too, so you can credit TLG a good element
intro without admitting Town Jr. is anything but total crap (I don't
happen to think it's TOTAL crap).

But anyway, what really got me fired up for Part 3 was an EMAIL from a
good LEGO acquaintance from Memmingen Germany named Kurt Richter, who
had an unusual find in Germany.  That would be a 1x3x2 classic LEGO
window in BLUE!!  I never knew they existed in that color.  I thought
that the extent of the smaller blue LEGO windows were the 1x2x2 found in
recent sets (such as the Derby Trotter, and a few freestyle/basic
sets).  If anyone can solve this mystery for Kurt (and the rest of us!),
please let us know!

I haven't run across the 1x3x2 yet, personally.  I haven't looked too
closely at the brochures though.

Blue windows were made in the 1x2x2 size, the 1x4x3 window size (with
blue frames), and also in the "skylight" window in a similar size, as
well as the taller 1x4x5 window  and the rare 1x6x5 blue windows (only
in space sets?).

The 1x6x5 thing was a "Homemaker" invention. Wait.  You knew that.  :-)

You mean that only space had them in blue?  That's possible.  I haven't
yet delved into the Homemaker stuff, having just recently come off the
great Pause Trains reorg (and I'm spending some time decompressing from
that).

But I never knew that they were ever made in blue in
any other classic window size.

I can't find any offhand, other than the 1x2x2 that you mention (and
then only in one set).

For blue doors, LEGO never made blue classic doors, but did make the
1x3x4 medium (1970's) doors/doorframes in blue (but they were never sold
with the same door and doorframe colors in the same sets).

Hmm. I don't even know which sets you mean, I can't find blue in either
doors or door frames (1x3x4 size frame).  But then, it's probably a
Universal Set that had them...

And then
there are the current doors, the 1x4x5 with a) the 4 window door, b) the
armor-guard and glass door, and c) maybe the all glass door (did they
make them in blue?).

Yeah:

(What do you mean by "armor-guard and glass door"?)

On to a different color ....  recently I saw a 1981 German  LEGO catalog
with a DB (Deutsche Bundesbahn - the German National Railway) train car
with 1x2x2 grey windows.  This was the only time I ever saw the 1x2x2
grey windows in a set.  Were they only made for LEGO Trains?

7740, perhaps?

No, I've not seen them elsewhere.

(IMHO) that leaves me with one window that was made back in 1982 (to the
best of my knowledge they were only made in that one set in that
color).... the Town House (6372) set with the very rare 1x4x5 windows
(dead common in any other color) in YELLOW!
(I would even pay $20 per window for these!)  Recently a Town House set
was bid up to $73.00, which was more than I wanted to pay for just 2
large yellow windows.

You should look into the frame/glass combination that came out to
replace that window.  Also 1x4x5.  Blue came in both

6542 Launch N' Load Seaport (3 of them)
9364 Dacta LEGO Hospital (10 of them)

Much more economical.  :-)

Please, if there is anything that may contradict me, or answers some of
these questions, please let us know!

Not much help this time, I'm afraid, but $20 per window?  Ouch.  Find
someone with the Hospital and get more at once, at least!  :-)

(...) I'm sure most people would use the catalogs. If Gary actually remembers where all the windows come from, I have one thing to say: I want your recall capabilities! ;) Anyways, I'll just post corrections/additions when part 4 gets posted. ;) (...) (26 years ago, 1-Apr-99, to lugnet.build)
