New Alpha Team Canopies -- A Change of Heart

Hey Y'all:

After getting the new 4792 set today as a pre-Xmas gift, I have decided that
I am getting to like *some* aspects of the new canopy design -- or at the
very least, the design and roll-out of these new elements is not as bad as I
had originally thought.  I'll give the bad first (just to get it out of the
way), and then the good.

The bad: the new upper and lower canopies are very shallow and barely allow
space for a minifig to even sit -- you can probably forget about head
accessories unless the figure is reclining. A seated minifigure occupies
four of the six available studs on the floor of the interior of these
cockpits, leaving only two studs as possible attachment points for other
interior cockpit artifacts.  Should you choose to attempt to add interior
cockpit stuff, those two available studs abut against an up-slanting curve
and only have an available forward space of perhaps 2x3. What's more, you
will need two plates to raise you above the level of the slant mentioned
above -- so the interior starts to look chunky fast.

The good: as someone else has already mentioned, TLC has done a tolerable
job of giving us the right kinds of supplemental elements to further flesh
out the new angles presented by these new canopies -- a fact I didn't fully
appreciate until I saw the elements contained within the #4792 and got a
better look at a slightly clearer image of the #4793.  #4792 contains 6
elements that could be used to seal what I had originally perceived as the
open sides of the new canopies. So, one is actually able to create cockpit
designs featuring completely enclosed spaces with these new elements. Some
of these supplemental elements seal the opening and drop straight down,
others flare out to the sides at the angle of ordinary slopes.  I note that
#4795 has some of these elements in dark grey, while #4793 has some of them
in black (with printing), and also in trans-red.  I expect most of us will
want to see more of these in both the flared and non-flared varieties in
more complete color schemes to include trans-black (smoke), trans-red,
yellow, black, and maybe red.

Initially, I was annoyed at all the Jack Stone elements and new angles of
the 2002 Alpha Team sets -- and while the Jack Stone elements still annoy
me, the new curved canopies may prove more interesting than I had originally
anticipated.  In any case, I now realize that TLC had more up their sleeve
as respects the new canopy design than was revealed by the Mutant Squid set
taken on its own (which is how managed to formulate an erroneous negative
opinion of the new canopy).

(...) #4793 also includes another piece that interacts with the new canopies. It is an adapter with 2 technic connectors on one side and a click hinge on the other side. This piece can be used to create hinged cockpits with the new windscreens (and (...) (23 years ago, 24-Dec-01, to lugnet.build)
