I have a question. I bought The World of Lego Toys way back when it cam out,
and only last week bought the DK book of LEGO at LIC. What I want to know is
whether there have been any other books published on the general history of
the company and of the Brick, or any book that significantly covers that
topic. There are lots of books now published by LEGO and others on
Mindstorms, comic adventures and project books like the Klutz series so that
now the Lego bookshelf is large. But I am only concerned with histories and
overviews. Does anyone have an answer? Perhaps Gary?

There are a number of other books about TLC, but they haven't been readily
available in America.

My favorite one, which did have a version published in English, is called, "50
Years of Play."  It has 128 pages with fabulous pictures seen nowhere else. I
have scans online of the cover and its artwork up close. The book is white:

[This directory was part of a project to catalog my books by or about TLC. I
never finished it.]

Here's a passage from the front of the book, written by the book's  editorial
group:
-------------
50 Years of Play

Published by the LEGO Group on the occasion of its 50th anniversary in August
1982.

The book reminisces over the 50-year period decade by decade.

Each commences with a passage by or about a Dane who was a child during that
particular decade. This is followed by a look at the world in which the company
operated at the time - and concludes with a relatively detailed picture of life
in and around the company.

To put together an exhaustive picture of the LEGO organisation would have been
possible only if all employees and friends of the LEGO "family" in Denmark and
abroad - each one of whom has played a part in developing and promoting the
success of the company - had made a written contribution to this book.

Clearly - and unfortunately - this was not possible.

Future historians, however, will no doubt in this untapped source be able to
find other angles and aspects of the first 50 years of the company.
------------

Published in 1998, "The LEGO Story" is a great little book, 215 pages, printed
in German. I comprehend enough text to enjoy it and feel it's worth having just
for its pictures, though the book is mostly text. It has a chapter devoted to
LEGO Maniacs on the Internet which talks about rec.toys.lego, Jeff Crites, the
game called "LEGO Wars," and James Mantor. Long-time online AFOLs should
remember those days.. TLC was faced with new challenges of their copyrights.
Here's a picture of the hardcover version:

Looks like it's now available in paperback. You can order it:
  http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/3499609053/

Published in 1999, "LegoWelt: Spiel mit der Phantasie" I think translates to
"LEGO World: Play with the Fantasy" or something similar. It's a very slick,
thin, tall book - much like those "pretty" books from Chronicle. It's a book as
conversation piece, with not much text but gorgeous pictures. Yet, it still does
a better job of covering the history of LEGO products than anything in stores
here. There are about 30 pages of content, half of which are full page color
photos of sets from old times. You can still get this one too:
  http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/377570812X/

There have been some others, but I can't help without doing some research first.
LMK if you'd like me to.
