Not really if you model a European railway...
Before the standard 20/30/40' containers the Dutch, German and most likely
some other railways experimented with door-to-door transport using special
freight boxes, which were around 1.5*2*1.5m
A few of these went on a small railway car (2 axle type) on special frames
(mounted sideways) Trucks had a similair frame which could be adjusted in
height and turned to line up with the railcar's frame. That way the boxes
could easily be loaded.

Especially in the Netherlands this concept saw wide use in the 1950's and
1960's, backed by the Dutch Railways, the DAF truck company and several
other parties. I'll try to scan a pic showing the system this weekend.

I'm working on a few of these cars with matching trucks to bring along to
Brickfest,
