This is a scale model of the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, which is at the tip of the Leelananu Peninsula in Michigan’s lower peninsula, at the mouth of Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay. The nearest town is Northport (Sutton’s Bay, Traverse City). The model was commissioned by the museum as part of their 150th anniversary celebration. See more pics at my MOC Pages page.

Part of the fun of the model was doing a lot of work with half-stud offsets. The foundation is offset in two dimensions from the walls above it, and the windows are offset horizontally from the walls. The nine-sided cupola was also a treat, working out a way to mount it and build a roof for it. The original lighthouse had a fixed light source with a round, fixed, fourth-order fresnel lens. I still have to add these to the model.

So, all you Michigan folks, this year, instead of stopping at the reservation and feeding the one-armed bandits, come all the way up to the tip of the peninsula and check out the museum and my model!

Hi, while I do not know the original building, I particularly like the way you did the roof construction, as that is an approach that I have been considering for my buildings for quite some time. The obvious drawback is that you can only build (...) (16 years ago, 3-Jul-08, to lugnet.build.arch, FTX)
