Ever since I started reading lugnet and brickshelf I have looked at the mecha that the Japanese builders produce with what can only be described as awe and reverence. It has been my goal to build like those guys, but after a year and a half I realise that the effortless style they put into their models isn’t all that easy to achieve (at least for me).

I think I’m getting closer with my latest build though.

This on took FAR too long to build. It started out as a much smaller pair of legs inspired by Chris Maddison’s latest mech, but as I built the upper section I realised the legs were far too small. They reached their present size in about 15 incremental steps.

The joint tech is fairly straightforward, with the possible exception of the hip joint,

which is a slightly gnawed (for friction) piece of 5 long pneumatic tubing. This gives a nice compact joint, and the tube bends enough to give a bit of splay.

And I actually built a gun! Yoiks. What is the world coming to.

Plmkwyt.

(...) snip (...) Very cool! And a brand-new mini-hip design too! When I first looked at it, I thought, "why didn't he taper the waist down more", but then I saw you had a minifig pilot in that torso! Some parts are a little too thin for my taste, (...) (20 years ago, 9-Jun-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
