Toys Found on Respond.com Bring Back Childhood Memories; Collector Finds
Discontinued Set of Lego Bricks
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 1999--Chad Manz, an avid
collector of Lego(R) bricks, never forgot the fun of his favorite toys as a kid
and Respond.com(TM) is getting him back in touch with his childhood.
Chad wanted to add the Lego Diving Expedition Explorer to his collection,
but he discovered the entire "Divers" set had been discontinued about a year
ago. Not being able to find "Divers" in any toy stores or from the Lego Group,
Chad turned to Respond.com, the online shopping service that connects Buyers
and
Sellers through email. Chad easily found an original, unopened Lego Diving
Expedition set.
Within 24 hours of placing a request on Respond.com, Chad received a
response from a seller with the collector's "Divers" set - priced at just over
$100. Chad bought the set from Jon Kozan's store, Bricks As You Like Them, or
BAYLIT, in Kansas. Two days later it was in Chad's hands.
Almost 500 individual Lego pieces make up the undersea set. In the set, a
yacht floats to an island past Lego sharks, an octopus and a tiny yellow
submarine. The island is full of secret caves, a hidden chest of gold and an
occasional skeleton.
"Respond.com can help find just about anything," said Chad, 26, a computer
sales executive who simply had to have the Diving Expedition Explorer. "I
wanted
to have something that was no longer available. Before Respond.com, I couldn't
find it anywhere. With Respond.com, I found exactly what I wanted and am
looking
to expand my Lego collection."
Chad continues to use Respond.com. Requests have included a bumper for an
old car, White Tail Cream Ale, a special beer from his hometown, and most
recently, a specific set of Sony headphones that he received within 24 hours
for
the price he wanted. In every case, Chad has received a response from
Respond.com with assistance on how to find his requested item or with pricing
and information on how to buy it.
Respond.com changes the way people shop online. Respond.com's free online
shopping service provides a way to shop for thousands of products and services
without the time and effort of combing through phone book listings, search
engine results, or waiting for the right item to appear for the right price on
an auction site.
Instead of spending hours or days surfing the Web or calling sellers,
buyers simply tell Respond.com what they are looking for, and Respond.com goes
to work finding Sellers that have exactly what they wanted. In addition, buyers
remain anonymous until they are ready to buy.
Buyers can use Respond.com to comparison shop, describe a product in
generic terms if they are not sure what they are looking for, and even track
down hard-to-find or complex goods and services -- something impossible with
other ecommerce sites.
For sellers, Respond.com offers a powerful new way to receive high-value
sales leads at a low cost. Sellers can register to receive inquiries from
thousands of categories of products and services and begin receiving buyer
requests immediately.
The nominal fee charged for seller category registration is significantly
less expensive than other traditional means of meeting customers, such as
online
advertising, the phone book, or classified ads. Because the service is email-
based, Respond.com allows sellers to maintain a Web presence and capture the
lucrative online market even if they do not have their own Web site.
About Respond.com
Respond.com (www.respond.com) is the leading online shopping service that
connects Buyers with Sellers through email. Buyers can shop effectively for a

for a storefront or a Web site. Based in Redwood City, California, the company
is funded by The Barksdale Group, Benchmark Capital and Hummer Winblad Venture
Partners. Respond.com was founded in 1998.
LEGO is a trademark of the LEGO Group of companies.

| (...) Wow, that's a very clever form of spam. So it was a real press release then, which they converted to a targeted email ad? Or was it never really a press release, and this is just pure spam? Did you receive this out of the blue or had you asked (...) (25 years ago, 23-Oct-99, to lugnet.general)
