All lugnet.com newsgroups are being renamed. You will need to unsubscribe
from all the groups and add them again.
The Explanation
===============
When we assigned names to groups, we thought it would be friendly (and
less typing) to set up a hierarchy where the groups do not all begin with
the 'lugnet.' prefix. So the group hierarchies build.*, lego.*, lugnet.*,
loc.*, etc. were chosen as top-level hierarchies because this is a private
newsserver which is not part of the mainstream Usenet.
Although this works perfectly for nearly everyone, it causes problems for
people using advanced filtering software and/or proxy servers for news.
In light of this, and to prevent any further unforseen related problems,
we're going to rename (almost) all of the newsgroups, as shown below:
lugnet.admin.database -> lugnet.admin.database
lugnet.general -> lugnet.admin.general
lugnet.adming.statistics -> lugnet.admin.statistics
announce -> lugnet.announce
build.general -> lugnet.build
build.cad -> lugnet.cad
lego.dear-lego -> lugnet.dear-lego
lego.general -> lugnet.general
loc.* -> lugnet.loc.*
market.* -> lugnet.market.*
off-topic.* -> lugnet.off-topic.*
build.publish -> lugnet.publish
build.reviews -> lugnet.reviews
build.robotics -> lugnet.robotics
lego.fan.starwars -> lugnet.starwars
build.storage -> lugnet.storage
build.trains -> lugnet.trains
So basically, anything that was lugnet.* before has moved down into
lugnet.admin.*, and everything else that's not lugnet.admin.* now is for
LEGO-oriented discussions (with the exception of the off-topic groups,
naturally.)
The renaming commences immediately and may take a few hours (I've never
done this before where articles are preserved during the renaming).
We apologize for the inconvenience, because it means you will need to
unsubscribe from all the groups and add them again. On the bright side,
this is an extremely rare occurrence, and I'll do my best to make sure that
existing articles survive the renaming so you won't need to repost anything.
While the renaming is in progress, you're not required to disconnect from
the server, but please don't post anything until an announcement is made
when the renaming is complete. (IMPORTANT: The first thing that will
happen after the existing groups go away is that the new groups will be
created. When this happens, the process is NOT complete -- the old
articles need to be re-injected into the new groups. Wait until an
announcement is made in lugnet.announce before posting again.)
If you're using Free Agent, you'll want to select Online/Refresh_Groups_List
and make sure "Delete All extinct groups" is seleted. Alternatively, you
can use Ctrl-A, Ctrl-S in the Subscribed Groups pane and tell it not to keep
the messages and groups. (This is especially important for lugnet.general,
which is sticking around but now has a different purpose.)
If you're using Netscape 4, you'll want to open the Netscape Message Center
and find the +lugnet.com line near the bottom, then delete it. Then you can
do File/New_Discussion_Group_Server to re-add lugnet.com.
