Hi Jeff!

I know of five ways to fake flying:

1. Attach model with string - digitally edit out supports later
(as you say, very time consuming)

2. Film model in such a way that the supports are hidden from camera view. In
   my movie, "2001: A Lego Odyssey" (http://eksl.cs.umass.edu/~atkin/movies/),
there is a frame where the prehistoric figure is jumping over a river. In
fact, his spear is attached to the ground, but the attachment is blocked
from view by a convenient plant.

3. A variant of #2: mount the subject in such a way that you can *film from
below*. Any strings will be hidden. This technique allows you to film
   continuously (as opposed to stop-animation).

4. Use a green or blue screen (just like in the real movies). Of course you'll
need a movie editing package that supports this (does Lego Studio?). This is
the technique I primarily used in my movie.

5. Render the flying objects in a CAD program with your set as the background.

Hope this helps!

I understand that the LEGO Studios set contains tips & tricks for making
models appear to fly without using string.  I've done some work on my
own in this regard (some of which can be seen on my website) but I'm
curious to know if there's an easier way.

Generally, I did the 'flying trick' by taking two photos, one with the
model and one without.  Using Fractal Design Paiter, I 'clone' the
background of the model-less picture over the support post or whatever
is holding the model up.  This takes a fair amount of work, and I can't
imagine doing it for every frame of a movie, so there's got to be an
easier way.  Anyone care to share experiences?
