Is there anything to lock the boom hinge in its extended position, or is is
held in place by gravity? The only improvment I can think to make would be a
a cable from the halfway point of the boom to the cabin for raising and
lowering it.

The boom hinge is held in place by gravity. The boom itself is on friction
pins, so in reality its held in place by the Hand of God (i.e., if I keep my
finger under the boom, it doesnt generally drop anything). I had wanted to put
in a worm gear solution to hold the boom in place, but I couldnt figure out how
to make one small enough. Im hoping to get some ideas from the more technic
minded people of NELUG this weekend. If anything good comes up, Ill probably
do a rebuild.
I had also thought about the boom cable idea, but, again, I didnt really have
the space. I may have to look at putting the entire thing on a longer base.
Thanks for the feedback!
