Dan,
I think it is a question of representation. It appeared to me when I paid
money that I was becoming a member of LUGNET, whatever that means. The
description of membership does not call the payment a 'donation' ; it is a
payment of what you think is fair for the services provided. I agree that many
of us are probably (in some poorly quantifiable sense) getting more than we
paid for.

Nevertheless, the manner in which this decision was made (and the decision
itself) somehow rankled me. I think it would have been more 'professional' to
say something pleasant, like 'We intended that all official Lego postings be
made in the blah.blah newsgroups. We request employees of TLC posting in an
official capacity to please follow these guidelines.' That would have been fair
and businesslike, as opposed to the strong wording and action.

Maybe Todd did ask TLC to do this, and they refused, but he could have let us
know. I still think it is just a bad idea - I personally (and clearly many
others here, I don't know if its a majority) would like to hear from Lego in
the appropriate theme-specific newsgroups.

Good point!  Something that someone mentioned to me today but I forgot about
since then.  I'm a paying member and that should say something.  I'm also
sure other large contributors (unfortunately due to my financial state, I
was only able to give the minimum) want to be given a bit more consideration
with stuff like this, too.

I wholehartedly disagree.  you decided you want to donate some money to
lugnet, great.  I think of it as paying for services I _already_
recieved from lugnet...  I don't think we're stockholders that can set
policy, or even need to be consulted.  if Todd and Suz decide they want
to shut down lugnet today, I'd be upset and sad, but I won't go demand
my money back - I already got back a lot more than I paid for...
