Any chance that turning off NNTP (except as presented by the web or mail
interfaces, but not accepting stuff from the outside world) would work?

It would mean that nntp users would be cut off completely, but is that worse, or
better, than sporadic outages that affect everyone?

I have no idea if that actually would work or not.

Please don't do this.  Turning off NNTP would dramatically reduce my (and I
suspect many others) participation in LUGNET - for me, it would virtually
eliminate it.

I suggest it as a temporary measure only until this problem were resolved other
ways. Think of it as a detour while the real road is repaired.

I have no idea if it's technically even feasible, or would solve the problem
(from the outside looking in, one could guess that if the NNTP server that was
the heart of LUGNET post managment did not accept connections at all, maybe you
would not be able to flood it but who knows) but it comes down to this:

- is it better that LUGNET only be sporadically available to everyone in the
current user set (disenfranchising everyone most of the time)...

- or is it better that LUGNET be solidly (1) available to a lot of people, but
not all (disenfranchising the NNTP users completely all the time but allowing
the other two schemes to work)?

I don't know which is better but I did want to suggest it(2).

1 - assuming that it actually worked to prevent nntp flooding from affecting the
server

2 - I already knew and already stated that it would disenfranchise nntp users.
However I didn't make clear that I was talking about a temporary pallative
rather than a permanent change.
