Just wanted to let people know this.  10 AM Central time.  Sept. 23, 2003.

Actually, the site wasn't down -- only the dynamic portions of the webserver
were shut off (voluntarily and automatically by the system) to help keep the
load average down.  The NNTP attacks are still coming and the total number of
compromised hosts out there that have been participating in the DoS attack --
and that are now blocked -- is up to 16.  Last night I installed a throttle on
the NNTP server to hopefully minimize the damage that newly appearing hosts can
inflict.  It's still a bit of a battle for now, though, and NNTP service is
still spotty, I'm afraid, until we get through this.

Any chance that turning off NNTP (except as presented by the web or mail
interfaces, but not accepting stuff from the outside world) would work?

It would mean that nntp users would be cut off completely, but is that worse, or
better, than sporadic outages that affect everyone?

I have no idea if that actually would work or not.
