Is there a way to search for a phrase without getting results for each
component word?  For instance, can I search for "cypress tree" without
getting 1000 results for "tree," 200 results for "cypress," and no results
for "cypress tree?"  I don't mean to sound like I'm throwing stones if this
is a complex technical issue, but I have the sense that I'm missing
something basic.

  Dave!

I am waiting for the stupid question...

In the mean time I will answer this non-stupid question. "+cypress +tree"

There you go, add a plus in front of each word.

FUT lugnet.faq

The only amendment I'll make is that having a quoted string be a search word
(not regarded as two) would be helpful-- If I'm looking for posts about THE
classic castle, the search string:
+classic +castle
may very well show me a lot more of what I don't want than:
+"classic castle"
There are better examples, I'm sure, (mainly because I remember doing this
and getting a lot of results that I didn't want) but in general, it'd
probably be a plus to have quoted items in search strings...

And while I'm at it... A more advanced search would be helpful too...
Something like:

Search: [newsgroup]
For posts by: [author]
Including words: [search words]
Posted prior to: [enter date]
Posted after: [enter date]
As a head of a thread: [checkbox]
Rated at least: [normal/highlighted/spotlighted]
Including a hyperlink: [checkbox]

Ok, some of the above are too picky, but at least they'd be helpful
sometimes... The 'author' field would be the most helpful for me, probably
followed by the date... Anyway, some thoughts...
