It looks to me like it's the side-effect of an AOL mailer bug. The message
<8c17e773.36436621@aol.com> included neither a References header nor an
In-Reply-To header with your message <36433ABB.410A3959@ctp.IWANTNOSPAM.com>
as a parent node. (But it should have, if the mailer was written properly.)
Another possibility (if it wasn't an AOL mailer bug) is that the author of
<8c17e773.36436621@aol.com> did a cut & paste maneuver of the message and
replied to it offline in an editor, then started a brand new message and
pasted the response in, thus losing the referrences.

p.s. Netscape properly maintains References/In-Reply-To headers. I think
even Microsoft Outlook Express does too. :)
