There was talk long ago, about a LUGNET chat.. mud/talker vs irc vs icq etc.
But with simple java chat applets available everywhere, I thought it might be
something for the 'white space' (eg
<http://www.lugnet.com/admin/general/?n=,-20&v=c>) at the right of the view,
although it should be linked from other sources too.

One objection is that it might dilute the forum debates.. but not if it were
logged and referrable eg: <chat:lugnet.pirates?date=2000-03-16&?st=205&?l=100>

The way I imagine it working is with groups doubling up as 'rooms', and those
with 'chat' enabled seeing a list of people currently browsing that group, who
want to chat too.

I'd guess that chat-participation would be a membership thing - to cover the
cost of any additional development, and HD space (if it was logged) :)

Actually, if it were logged, then you could do all sorts of funky things - like
view the logs of lugnet.trains for a particular day, and select start and end
points so that it could auto-generate the <chat:> reference for you.

I'd better stop before someone else calls me a web-facist! :) Although, if
<<chat:>> was interpreted on the server side, then news-by-mail, and NNTP folks
wouldn't be left in the dark!
