Well after reading some of last nights highlights I felt I just had
to post something. Kevin Clagues witty post has forced me to at least say
something about the condition here on Lugnet. The truth is that these issues are
destroying us. Imho the problem cannot be solved by any number of TOS
modifications or by new admin powers or lack there of. Lugnet is just running
into the problem of having more and more members. Let me be the first to say
that I am a newbie (or noob or n00b or however you spell it), but I think this
gives me a more objective opinion than some long time members who have been
doing this from the start. These are my suggestions I know that some of these
will require a lot of code but I think at this point that is unavoidable:
1. The Warning Light System. This would work like Ebay (or Bricklink) feedback.
On every post that a member makes there will be a link saying something to the
affect of report violations. When another member clicks on this link it would
take him or her to something a page looking something like this:
_____________________________________________
] [
] [
] Infraction 1 o [
] [
] Infraction 2 o [
] [
] Infraction 3 o [
] [
] Comments: [
] ____________________ [
] [ ] [
] [ ] [

] [____________________] [

] SUBMIT [
]___________________________________________ [
(There would be more infractions on the real thing and they would be replaced
with actual TOS violations)
Members would check off violations and leave a comment. Then
these results would do two things: One it would turn on a colored circle with
percentage numbers near the violators name. This would start at one hundred and
go down (including unlimited negative numbers) depending on how many complaints
were received. Second it would be routed to a place where admins could check it.
Depending on which news group the violating post was posted in it would go to a
different admin (e.g. Admin one is responsible for groups w, x, y, and z. Admin
2 is responsible for groups a, b, c, and d.) the admin would review the
complaints received once or twice a week (or more often depending on how busy
they are) and decide to remove or leave the feed back. The data the admins get
should automatically include a link to the violating post.
Maybe this system could include positive feedback too.
2. Get rid of .debate.
I know saying that wont make me popular with a lot of people but I
sincerely believe that .debate is hurting Lugnet more than it is helping. Im
sure it was started as a place for people to take their arguments but I dont
think that having it on Lugnet premises is a good idea.
3. Something between admins and curators.
I think that this while not absolutely necessary I think it would
help. The admins would elect among themselves Lugnet members to act as mediators
in arguments and generally assist in matters regarding the TOS. The elected
Members could turn down the position if they felt they werent suited or
wouldnt have time to do it right. Alternatively members could sign up on a list
to be selected. These mediators would be chosen every month. There would be
approximately 2 mediators for every admin.
I think these sugestions will help because: They give members a degree of power
so that they can help police themselves, and they take preasure off the admins
to be every where do everything at once.
Remember this is just my opinion. Im just tired of seeing these issues tearing
apart a site that was meant for those who share a common hobby to enjoy it
together.
