Just what it says.  Via the web interface, I click on the "reply" button, write
my note, change the newsgroups, followup-to and subject, and get the following

It also generated the same error no matter which of the possibilities I changed

Thanks for reporting this, James.

Wow, something is funked up with the References line in the article (I can see
the rejected article in the dead-articles file on the server).  There's an
extra blank line after the References header for some weird reason (not your
fault).  A blank line signals the end of the headers, so there's no subject
line in the message (even though there is -- but it's in the body of the
message rather than the headers).

Hrrm...

Well, here's another clue:  the References header in the message you posted is
~511 characters long.  I think one of the components somewhere in CNews (the
newsserver software) is cutting the line incorrectly if/when it's truncating
the line to 511/512 characters.  The coincidence here is that the last
Message-ID just happens to line up perfectly (not being chopped) at the end of
the line, which makes me suspect a line 'fold' pipe somewhere.

Here is the References header, wrapped to fit in ~75 columns:

See -- there's a word boundary there where the ^ is marking it.  The chances
of this happening are about 1 in 25 once you get really deep in a thread.  I
noticed an odd thing yesterday where a post had 2 headers in the body of the
message -- must be the same thing happening, but at the time I thought it was
just a bad newsreader or the poster adding the headers to the body by hand for
some odd reason.

Anyway, it could still be anything (even the web interface directly) but I
suspect something in the injection mechanisms of the newsserver.

I'll have to look at this tomorrow or the next day; I've got to be up late
tonight packing a lot more for AucZILLA VIII and we're visiting Suzanne's
family tomorrow on short notice.
